Forum | Turin - World Design Capital 2008

A city is more than the mere sum of its buildings. It is a live and complex entity made up of the meeting of different needs, identities and times. Torino is more than a prospering industrial town in northern Italy. It is not only the capital of the region Piedmont, but also the first World Design Capital. The designation has been awarded in 2008 for the first time and honours the city´s strategy to integrate design as a major component of its development. Torino successfully modernized its public appearance without calumniating its history.
Past and present harmonically coexist in an urban area and present design not as an act, but as a process and an orientation between different views and time trends. But in Torino this title is not the goal, but an encouraging step in a transformation that began 10 years.
On the occasion of the appointment the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade and the International Design Center Berlin, have organised a seminar, which is going to take place in the rooms of the International Design Center on 22nd of May, 2008. The referees are leading representatives of the design scene in Torino and Berlin.
