Design Views: Sanghyeok Lee
Exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum

Details

Sanghyeok Lee’s objects are intriguing and inviting to look at and use. They appear to be everyday objects – mirrors, tables, shelves and chairs. However, when taking a closer look and engaging in a dialogue with the objects, something new is revealed – something hidden behind the perfect workmanship, minimalist design and harmony between forms and function that only comes to light when interacting with and sensually experiencing the objects. South Korean designer Sanghyeok Lee exhibits five of his works, placed and presented in different spots in the museum.

Design Discourse: Nudging & Persuasive Design

Details

Not only things are shaped by design. Human behavior can be influenced by design as well. This realization is not new, but in combination with digital tools, its implementation gains a new dimension.

Companies as well as politics specifically use methods of behavioral economics such as nudging in order to influence people. David Cameron even created a nudge unit that helped inducing the British to more organ donations. Nudging works and is successful – that is proven. It usually even works much better than threats, penalties or prescriptions, and better than informing or lecturing. That is good and terrifying at the same time.

Since Richard Thaler received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2017 for the research he did on this topic, the approach of behavioral or persuasive design has been discussed increasingly in the design context. When does user-orientation and well-intentioned influence lead to incapacitation and immorality? This is what we will discuss with Peter Post, Managing Director of the creative agency Scholz & Volkmer, Prof. Dr. Max von Grafenstein, who is doing research on the topic of “Big Data, Nudging and Digital Self-Determination”, behavioral economist Dr. Mira Fischer, and Cesy Leonard from the Center for Political Beauty.

Design Views: studio b severin
Exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum

Details

In a series of everyday objects, Birgit Severin and Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo focus on the influences of the industrial revolution and the new material glass on the art of the 19th century. Inspired by Claude Monet's image Impression, soleil levant – the epitome of impressionism – and by Japanese woodcuts the two designers create objects from traditionally made, rolled glass. Like the motif in Monet's picture, these objects remain sketchy. Form and function fade into the background in favor of the immediate atmospheric impression.

Birgit Severin founded the studio b severin in Berlin, in 2013, and now she leads it together with her partner Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo. Her works move at the intersection of art, technology, craftsmanship and design.

Design Views: Buki Akomolafe
Exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum

Details

Traditional crafts and a very unique design language characterize the work of Berlin fashion designer Buki Akomolafe. In her collections, androgynous, precise cuts meet eye-catching wax prints. Especially the elaborately quilted skirts and tops are remarkable and, like the basics, entirely produced in the designer’s studio and a small manufactory in Berlin. She works only with ecological materials, such as biologically grown cotton and hemp silk or West African wax print fabrics. Buki Akomolafe spent her early childhood in Nigeria with her father, who was managing an agricultural project. Saving resources is just as important to her as creating a new awareness of fashion and materials.

Design Views: WertelOberfell
Exhibition at Kunstgewerbemuseum

Details

Good product design involves a great deal of work and requires plenty of experience and skills. The Design Intent experiences an evolutionary development and needs sufficient time to mature. This not necessarily linear process requires extensive analysis and ultimately also good feeling to make the right decisions at the right time.

WertelOberfell will be working on some experimental designs on site at KGM, and provide insights into their work processes. The focus will be on iterative artwork using 3D printers and CAD programs. In this way, visitors can observe how a design evolves from the first idea – the Design Intent – into its final version.

Expert Talk in Berlin: The Politics of Design
»Design as a tool for social and ecological change«

Details

As part of the exhibition "Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design", the Vitra Design Museum and the Volkswagen Group invite you to an interdisciplinary panel discussion in Berlin:

More and more designers are taking on the responsibility associated with the realisation that design is an important tool for social, ecological and hence political change. They develop projects that focus on complex themes such as sustainability, identity, inclusion, our consumer behaviour and the effects of global digitisation. But while there is still some agreement on the formulation of goals - such as social justice or a clean environment - opinions differ as to why design has to face the big questions of our time, how these goals can be achieved, and what influence design can actually exert on them.

The panelists Axel Kufus, product designer and university professor, Henriette Ackermann, trend and material designer, and Amelie Klein, curator at the Vitra Design Museum, will discuss these questions.
