Slide Evening at IDZ
A look at the Olympic year 1980 in Moscow – through the eyes of Otl Aicher
“The peaceful idea of the Games was close to his heart,” said Willi Daume—who had brought the 1972 Summer Olympics to Munich—about Otl Aicher, the designer of the “cheerful Games.” Two Olympiads later, the Summer Games took place in Moscow. Aicher worked there as a consultant to the organizers and traveled to the city for the opening ceremony in July 1980—a place that, for him, alongside Berlin and New York, was one of the most important “crucibles of new ideas and concepts” of the 20th century. As always on his travels, the passionate photographer carried his camera with him.
A total of four circular magazines containing 35mm slides from this trip to Moscow have made their way from Rotis to Berlin. We invite you to join us in discovering this yet-unseen treasure! So far, we only know of 18 slides in digital form—they offer a small taste and spark curiosity for more. Our special thanks go to Aicher’s eldest son Florian, who has made the images available to us and will also be present that evening.
